Budd Proposes Bill to Make Assaulting a Police Officer a Deportable Offense

May 18, 2023

Washington, D.C. — Today, Senator Ted Budd (R-NC) introduced the Protect Our Law Enforcement with Immigration Control and Enforcement (POLICE) Act. The bill amends the Immigration and Nationality Act to explicitly state that an illegal immigrant may be deported for assaulting a police officer. Current law does not cover all assaults against law enforcement, meaning some immigrants can remain in the country even after committing this reprehensible crime.

Senator Budd was joined by Senator Katie Britt (R-AL).

The House bill, H.R. 2494, was led by Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-NY) and passed the House on Thursday.

Sen. Budd said in a statement:

“Supporting our police includes removing dangerous people who do them harm. If an illegal immigrant commits the crime of assaulting an officer, they should be subject to immediate deportation. Our lawmakers must always back the men and women who protect and serve our communities.”

The North Carolina Troopers Association said:

“The POLICE Act sends a clear message to criminals: If you assault a trooper, you don’t get to stay in our country. We support this bill and thank Senator Budd for leading it.”
